Florence Irene Wildish was born on 2 October 1906 in Steyning, Sussex,[1] and was christened at St John the Evangelist in Preston, Brighton on 20 December 1906.[2] She was known during her life as Rene.[3] [1911 census [4]] Rene was confirmed at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Preston on 19 March 1921.[5] Exactly three months later, she appeared with her family on the 1921 census, at which time she was still a full-time student.[6] She lived in the family home in Tivoli Crescent until her marriage,[7] and worked as a clerk.[8]
Rene married Bertram Stanley Phipps at the Church of the Good Shepherd on 28 October 1933.[9] The witnesses were her father Robert, Gilbert W. King, and W. J. Potter.[10] At the time of their marriage, Bertram was an auctioneer and estate agent.[11] He had been born in Bombay on 8 May 1906, the son of a merchant and British India shipping agent.[12] He was christened at St John the Evangelist in Colaba on 4 June 1906,[13] and had grown up in Dulwich, London.[14] At the time of their marriage, Bertram was living at 23 Melrose Avenue, Willesden Green.[15]
Rene and Bertram started their marriage life living with her parents in Tivoli Crescent.[16] During this time Bertram was the proprietor of his own auctioneer and surveyor business.[17] Their son Malcolm was born in 1938,[18] followed by their daughter Sally a dozen years later.[19]
Rene and Bertram moved to Watford, Hertfordshire, where they lived at 122 Cassiobury Drive.[20] In about 1970 they retired to Little Peppers, Shire Lane, Chorleywood, Hertfordshire.[21] Shortly before Bertram's death, they moved again to Sladmore Farm House Annex, Cryers Hill Road, Holmer Green, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.[22] This was an annex on Malcolm's property. Like his father, Malcolm was an estate agent, surveyor and valuer, specialising in country houses.
During the early 1980s, Rene participated in the Little Missenden Festival, submitting her poetry. She came third place in 1980 with her poem The Gulf.
Bertram died on 15 November 1981 in High Wycombe aged 75. Shortly thereafter, Rene decided to migrate to New Zealand, to live near Sally who had moved there. Rene lived out her final years on Rossiters Road in Loburn, a rural area north of Christchurch. She died of a heart attack following stomach ulcer complications in Christchurch Hospital on 15 November aged 87.
